"Disease starts out humbly in the body, as some imperceptible imbalance, and proceeds slowly from there. The outcome of a full blown disease maybe devastating but it has been built up through insignificant everyday actions. What we eat, drink, and how we behave, how our emotions affect us - these are small things. But no action is lost on the body. We are always building. Every bite of food, every breath, is like laying a brick, even if we aren't aware of the building."
- Deepak Chopra -

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractic is a process of natural and drug-free care that is intended to create and promote wellness within the body. Wellness is the pursuit of the optimal expression of health.

Chiropractors assist in the pursuit of health primarily by locating, detecting and removing interference from the nervous system. "The nervous system controls and coordinates all organs and structures of the human body" (Grays Anatomy, 29 ed. page 4). The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

Nerve interference can create abnormal neurological patterns and thus, affect our overall quality of life. It can range from making us feel stiff, create migraine or tension headaches, to numbness and tingling down an arm or leg. There are many other examples of how nerve interference can present itself as a symptom. Often, these abnormal neurological patterns can present no immediate sign or symptom - similar to how a dental cavity begins.

Chiropractic care is intended to restore the proper nervous system flow and function. This involves applying a specific force in a specific direction in order to reduce the nerve interference. Chiropractors also deal with problems in the extremity areas i.e. shoulders, knees, ankles.

Chiropractors are the only professionals that are trained to detect and remove nerve interferences within the body. Doctors of chiropractic must complete a minimum of three years of undergraduate education before applying to a chiropractic college. Once accepted into a chiropractic program there is another four years of additional training.

NERVE INTERFERENCES AND STRESS

The causes of nerve interferences can be grouped into three categories - physical stress, mental/emotional stress and chemical stress.

  • Physical stress relates to any traumas that we may experience through out our days. It maybe as obvious as a motor vehicle accident or as subtle as a repetitive work task. Not all physical stress is negative. Exercise is a very beneficial stress which helps to complete a healthy lifestyle.
  • Mental/Emotional stress combines the relationships that we are involved with - family, friends, and co-workers. It is the situations that we experience and how we react to them. Often high mental/emotional stress will result in physical manifestations, for some it can be stomach ulcers, others headaches. The affected area can often be traced back to nerve interference.
  • Chemical stress is a very broad class that extends to the chemicals that are encountered in the environment, and anything that we place into our body.
The more healthy the choices that we make for ourselves, the healthier we will become. The healthier we are, the less susceptible that we are to experiencing nerve interferences.
